Your Immune System with Yoga *The Thymus and Lymphatic Systems* |
||
| Thymus
Gland
|
||
The
thymus gland is positioned in the upper part of the chest cavity, directly
behind the sternum. Spiritually, it is believed to be where intent originates
and it connects the emotions of Divine love, Compassion, Truth and Forgiveness
with the area where language originates allowing one to speak from the
heart. It is also known as the Seat of The Soul Physically, the role of the thymus gland is to process lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that travel the body through the bloodstream. They stop at lymph nodes to ensure everything is working properly, and if not, it is believed that they jump into action to fix any issues. These T-lymphocytes, or T-cells, play a part in cellular immunity by blocking the invasion of harmful foreign agents, viruses, and bacteria. They also aid in preventing the abnormal cell growth that occurs with cancer. When young, the thymus gland will reach the size of an apple and then slowly shrinks until it becomes the size of a small marble in the elderly. When a person reaches senior citizen status, it is likely their thymus is barely discernible from surrounding fatty tissues. |

Chest opening upper back bends will activate the primary organ of the immune system, the thymus gland, located in the center of the chest. The most beneficial postures for this purpose are Cobra, Pigeon, Fish, Boat, Bow and Bridge. Since the thymus gland is located at the fourth chakra center, chanting “yum,” this chakra’s bija mantra, while performing these poses can further activate the thymus gland. |
||
| Lymphatic System | ||
The
lymphatic system is an extensive and interconnected system of vessels,
spaces, and nodes in the body which circulates lymph, a fluid made from
protein and other fluids. Lymph is initially part of the blood, but as
blood flows through the body, lymph slowly leaks out, taking hazardous
substances with it and filtering these substances through the lymph nodes,
which trap these substances. Over time, the lymph slowly works its way
around the body, eventually re-entering the heart so that it can be circulated
all over again. |
||
| Yoga for Lymphatic System | ||
Inversions
increase the passive circulation of the lymphatic system, which is responsible
for the production and circulation of the immune cells to defend the body
from the viruses and bacteria. Inversions such as shoulder Stand, headstand,
plow and legs up the wall pose, will all help improve the flow of lymph
and immune cells through the body. Twists and hip openers activate secondary
organs of the immune system: the spleen and the lymph nodes in groin and
armpits. These organs are the production sites for the immune cells, so
using yoga poses to target these organs during a cold or flu would be
especially beneficial. Use twists such as seated twist, prayer twist,
and knee down twist, and hip openers such as bound angle, seated angle,
and pigeon to activate these organs to keep them healthy and strong. |
